Here’s how DTK1234 works

DTK1234 is divided into 6 Segments.

Intro Segment

Design Doing, not Thinking

In this Segment, students discover some things about being creative, go on a design hunt, and experience a design process from start to end in one sitting.

They are introduced to the theory of perceived affordance and tasked to look for real life examples of “Norman Doors” around them.

Segment 1

Systematic Creativity

Moving towards creative outcomes can feel like waiting for a stroke of luck or a random occurrence that we have no control over. In Segment 1, students learn to access their creativity through a series of systematic methods. They will learn to reframe their innovation topic to discover new ways to tackle problems and create opportunities in a new light.

Segment 2

Empathize

In Segment 2, students learn to build their empathy muscle and to think in other people’s perspectives. They will learn methods and frameworks to conduct effective user interviews and observations of their users and learn how to translate their discoveries into insights and future opportunities.

Segment 3

Do, Undo, Redo

Prototypes help us connect the ideas in our head to the real world, and help us reflect and assess our understanding of a design situation. In Segment 3, students learn different prototyping methods while discussing key designerly attitudes toward prototyping. They put their learning into action through the building of low-fi prototypes for their project.

Segment 4

Evaluate with People

To fully understand the usefulness of one’s idea, one must evaluate it with the relevant users. In this Segment, students are introduced to different evaluation methods and are tasked to evaluate their proposed solutions with people. They then synthesize their feedback and observations gathered into insights that can help them advance their ideas further.

Wrap Up Segment

Thinking about Design Thinking

To conclude our module, students consolidate and reflect on their takeaways in the form of a Design Thinking Journal. They make connections to their work in previous Segments, and curate their unique Design Thinking journey.

Each segment has its own Individual Learning Activity (ILA) and Team-based Workshop (TBW).

Individual Learning Activity (ILA) are asynchronous activities based on learning videos hosted online.

Each ILA contains guided videos and worksheets that are designed in-house.

Each ILA is led by a Lecturer and students are to complete their ILAs before coming to class for its Team-Based Workshop.

Team-based Workshops (TBW) are in-person tutorial sessions.

TBWs are where the module comes to live! Instructors take learners through fun, action-packed and reflective workshops. As trained facilitators, they deepen a learner's takeaways by creating a space for co-creation, community and embodied learning.
